Tomato Pappu Recipe (Andhra Style)

Tomato Pappu is a traditional Andhra dish that combines the tangy flavour of tomatoes with the earthy richness of toor dal. This simple yet flavorful Tomato Pappu recipe is perfect with rice or roti and is a staple in many South Indian households. It’s not only delicious but also packed with protein and essential nutrients.

Ingredients:

  • Toor Dal – 1 cup
  • Tomatoes – 2 large, chopped
  • Green Chilli – 1, slit
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 4 cups

For Seasoning:

  • Oil / Ghee – 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Fenugreek Seeds – ½ teaspoon
  • Dry Red Chilli – 1
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
  • Turmeric Powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Chilli Powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder – 1 tablespoon
  • Tomato – 1 small, chopped

Tomato Pappu Recipe Instructions:

  1. Rinse the toor dal well in several changes of water and soak for 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, combine the soaked dal, 4 cups of water, chopped tomatoes, and slit green chilli. Bring to a boil, then cover and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  3. Add salt to the cooked dal and stir well. Keep it simmering, adding water if needed.
  4. In a separate pan, heat the oil or ghee. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dry red chilli, and curry leaves. Once they start to crackle, add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, and the chopped small tomato. Stir and cook for a minute.
  5. Pour this seasoning mixture over the simmering dal and mix thoroughly.
  6. Let the dal simmer for another 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
  7. Serve hot with rice or roti.
