This easy coconut chutney recipe makes a fresh, creamy South Indian side for idli, dosa, uttapam and vada. Roasted gram adds body, green chilli brings gentle heat, and a quick tempering gives the chutney its familiar aroma.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated fresh or thawed frozen coconut
  • 2 tbsp roasted gram (dalia)
  • 1 green chilli, or to taste
  • Small piece of ginger (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • ½–¾ cup water, as needed
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 6–8 curry leaves and a pinch of hing (optional)

How to Make Coconut Chutney

1. Blend the chutney

Add coconut, roasted gram, green chilli, ginger, salt and a little water to a blender. Blend until smooth, adding more water gradually to reach a spoonable consistency.

2. Prepare the tempering

Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them pop. Add urad dal and cook until lightly golden, then add curry leaves and hing if using. Switch off the heat.

3. Finish and serve

Pour the tempering over the chutney and stir. Taste and adjust salt or thickness. Serve fresh with ragi dosa or South Indian sambar.

Tips for Tasty Chutney

  • Add water little by little so the chutney does not become too thin.
  • For a milder taste, remove the green chilli seeds or use half a chilli.
  • If using frozen coconut, thaw it first for easier blending.
  • For food safety, refrigerate leftovers promptly in a covered container and use within 1–2 days.
